By mattypenny, on October 22nd, 2008% I am very unsure about the derivation of the name ‘Romer Road’, but I think that it’s reasonably likely that it is named after Sir Robert Romer.
Sir Robert Romer was made Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1901 1.

By mattypenny, on October 21st, 2008% Rosemary is, of course, the name of a herb. It is believed to ‘help prevent cancer and age-related skin damage, boost the functioning of the liver and act as a mild diuretic’ 1
The word ‘rosemary’ is derived from the Latin ros-marinus, meaning ‘dew of the sea’. 2

By mattypenny, on October 20th, 2008% According to Google Translate 1, Rouge mont literally translates to ‘Red Mountain’. However, I think mont often means hill or mount, rather than mountain, as in Mont St Michel or Montmartre, neither of which would qualify as mountains.
Rougemont Close seems to be named after the Rougemont House which was once the headquarters of the . . . → Read More: Rougemont Close SP1
By mattypenny, on October 20th, 2008% The ‘Rowan’ is a tree in the rose family 1. Rowan Close follows a theme of naming roads after trees in this part of Bemerton Heath – others include Hazel Close, Pinewoods Close and Cedar Close.
The rowan is seen as significant in some superstitions. This is believed to go back to a Greek myth . . . → Read More: Rowan Close SP2
By mattypenny, on October 19th, 2008% There is an interesting reference to a ‘Rowbarrow’ field system, associated with Neolithic or Early Bronze age worked flint on the Megalithic Portal site1, but the contributor has named the field system after Rowbarrow Gardens, rather than the other way round.
Update: On the Wiltshire County Council website there is a record of a ‘Round . . . → Read More: Rowbarrow Gardens SP2
By mattypenny, on October 18th, 2008% Russell Road is off of Bedford Road, parallel with Devizes Road.
I am fairly sure that it is named on the same theme as other roads in the vicinity – parts of London. Both Russell and Bedford aren’t actually districts in London in the way that Kensington, Richmond and Westminster are (these are all roads . . . → Read More: Russell Road SP2
By mattypenny, on October 17th, 2008% Russell Street and Russell Terrace are both located in Wilton. I’m not sure where the name comes from.
There was a Russell family in Wilton in the 13th century 1, but it’s a common enough name – this may not be relevant.
There is also a Russell Road in Salisbury, but that is, I . . . → Read More: Russell Street SP2, Russell Terrace SP2
By mattypenny, on October 17th, 2008% Rutherfurd Walk is the small gap between Reeve The Baker and the Guildhall. It has the Market Place at one end and Ox Row1 at the other.
This passageway has probably existed since the ‘new’ Guildhall was built in 1795, but it was only named in April 20052. It is named after Edward Rutherfurd, as . . . → Read More: Rutherfurd Walk, Salisbury
By mattypenny, on October 16th, 2008% The obvious meaning of ‘saddler’ is somebody who makes or sells saddles. It is, or was, also used in the army for the person whose job it is to look after the saddles 1.
More interestingly, perhaps, Saddler was also the NATO code name for a Soviet missile – the R-16 was known as the . . . → Read More: Saddlers Mead SP2
By mattypenny, on October 15th, 2008% Saint Alban is known as the first English martyr. He was executed by the Romans for sheltering a priest, although up until he did so, he himself was not a Christian.
The legend, which comes largely from the account of Saint Bede, is that Alban disguised himself as the priest, and gave himself up . . . → Read More: St Albans Close, Salisbury
