Roberts Road SP2

I don’t know the derivation of the name of Roberts Road. It could be the name of the original landowner or developer. A prominent Salisbury citizen by the name of Roberts was Dr John Roberts. He built ‘Little Ben’ – the clock tower by Fisherton Bridge – in memory of his wife.

Rogers Close SP2

Rogers Close is in Quidhampton.

This could be named after the landowner or developer of the time when the Close was developed.

Bishop Roger

Alternatively it may be that the name of the close is a tribute to ‘Roger of Salisbury’ who was Bishop from 1102 to 1139.1

Rolfes Court

Rolfes Court was named after the Rolfe family who were merchants and landowners. They also gave their name to Rolfe’s Chequer 1.

Rollestone Street SP1

Roman Road SP2

Roman Road is to the North of Salisbury – it connects Devizes Road to the Wilton Road.

I think it is part, or possibly a continuation, of The Portway, which is the Roman road which connected Dorchester to London.
