A prominent Salisbury citizen by the name of Roberts was Dr John Roberts. He built ‘Little Ben’ – the clock tower by Fisherton Bridge – in memory of his wife.

This could be named after the landowner or developer of the time when the Close was developed.
Bishop Roger
Alternatively it may be that the name of the close is a tribute to ‘Roger of Salisbury’ who was Bishop from 1102 to 1139.1

I think it is part, or possibly a continuation, of The Portway, which is the Roman road which connected Dorchester to London.
