I like the view of the Cathedral from Castle Street, although I’ve never managed to get photograph that captures it.
I lived away from Salisbury for nearly 20 years and when I came back, it was a surprise that the spire has the windows that you can just about make out in this . . . → Read More: The Cathedral from Castle Street
By mattypenny, on March 25th, 2010% Manning Close is on the Bishopdown Farm estate, to the north of Salisbury.
I don’t know who Manning Close is named after. It’s one of a number of roads in the area which are a bit of a mystery.
By mattypenny, on March 21st, 2010% To celebrate the first day of spring, I think this is a representation of the Green Man. I could be wrong here – he’s not quite as verdant and covered in plant life as other Green Men.
Anyway, it’s a nice little sculpture above the door of Lloyds TSB in Blue Boar Row.

By mattypenny, on March 16th, 2010% Manor Farm Road is in Milford, which is the slightly nebulous area to the east of Salisbury. It runs along the eastern edge of Milford Hill, from Laverstock Road to the bottom of Milford Hollow.
I don’t know whether Manor Farm still exists or what the extent of it was, but I would expect that . . . → Read More: Manor Farm Road, Milford
By mattypenny, on March 12th, 2010% This head is one of a pair supporting what I think is called an ‘oriel window’ above the Castle Galleries antique shop in Castle Street. This shows the head as part of it’s pair supporting the window: . . . → Read More: Antique shop in Castle Street
By mattypenny, on March 8th, 2010% Manor Road runs along the top of Milford Hill, from Kelsey Hill to Wain-a-Long Road.
I’m not sure why it was called Manor Road. It could be a reference to the ‘manor of Milford’, which is how the Milford area was referred to in older documents and maps.
It might be derived from the building . . . → Read More: Manor Road, Salisbury
By mattypenny, on March 7th, 2010% I visited the Ordnance Survey for a talk on their Open Space mapping tool last week. This is my first attempt at creating a map annotated with what I think are the derivations of the road names. It’s for a fairly small area of East Harnham. It would be great to create one . . . → Read More: Annotated map of East Harnham

I quite like this view of the back of Saint Paul’s Church, taken from the Spire View roundabout. It’s not a great photo, but it’s an interesting view.
I wrote about how Saint Paul’s church was built to replace the older Saint Clement’s church, which gives “Churchfields” its name on my post on St . . . → Read More: Saint Paul’s Church from behind
By mattypenny, on March 1st, 2010% Maplecroft is on the ‘Ridings Mead’ estate, to the south of the city centre. Maple Crescent is in the Fugglestone area on the east of Wilton.
Maples come in many different varieties. The sugar maple is tapped to make maple syrup.
The maple leaf is featured in the flag of Canada.
It has been a . . . → Read More: Maplecroft, Salisbury and Maple Crescent, Wilton

This is currently my favourite book on Stonehenge. It covers the influence of the Stones on art, architecture and such
