Salisbury in old postcards #5

Salisbury - Cathedral, Gates, Poultry Cross, St Annes St

Another old postcard of Salisbury, Wiltshire. As you can see it’s a montage of different views – the Poultry Cross, both sides of the High Street Gate, Salisbury Cathedral from Saint Ann’s Street and the a view from the the Town Path.

I like the postcard very much but it’s slightly frustrating in that a . . . → Read More: Salisbury in old postcards #5

Salisbury - Italianate Church of Saint Mary and Nicholas in Wilton

This is an old postcard of ‘the Italianate Church’ at Wilton, looking much as it does now.

It’s the Church of Saint Mary and Nicholas in Wilton. The style of the church was inspired by Catherine Romanovich, who was the wife of George Augustus Herbert, the 11th Earl of Pembroke. She liked Italian architecture

Salisbury Cathedral Cloisters

This is a view of Salisbury Cathedral cloisters. The cloisters were supposed to have been one of the locations used in the filming of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The word ‘cloister’ sometimes has slightly negative connotations. A ‘cloistered upbringing’ implies the person had been brought up without enough contact with the . . . → Read More: Salisbury in old postcards #3

Salisbury - Sunset over the High Street gate

A lovely tinted picture postcard of the High Street Gate, from within the Close. On the right is the Matrons College.

Update: I found the photo below on the Francis Frith website. I’m not sure whether it’s the same picture before it’s tinted or not, but it’s a very similar view. Reproduced courtesy of . . . → Read More: Salisbury in old postcards #2

Salisbury, England Old Postcard

I’ve collected a number of old postcards of Salisbury. I thought I’d share them on the website.

This one is a collections of different views. Going clockwise from the top left we’ve got:

The Poultry Cross Salisbury Cathedral, probably taken from the Long Bridge Saint Anne’s Gate Salisbury Cathedral from the north west – . . . → Read More: Salisbury in old postcards #1

Wayne Rooney Art in Salisbury

Wayne Rooney Art

To mark Rooney’s latest problems with officialdom, I thought I’d post a picture of this very good graffiti-style portrait.

It was on the wall of club/restaurant in Milford Street, Salisbury.

I think it’s a great picture – it really captures the agression of the player.

I can’t make out the signature on the artwork. . . . → Read More: Wayne Rooney Art in Salisbury

The Salisbury Milford Street Bridge Mural

Milford Bridge Mural, Milford Hill, Salisbury - Crystal Tavern

My friend Fred Fieber was lead artist on the Milford Street Bridge Mural. He’s kindly given me a really nice photo to put on the website.

I’ve cropped the photo down to this image of the Crystal Tavern:

Alistair Darling at Millets

Milletts Darling Poster

Since Alistair Darling is in the news again1, I thought I’d post this advertising poster. It was outside Millets in the Old George Mall in Salisbury a couple of years ago.

It’s fairly unusual for a high street store to allude to politics but it’s more interesting than the average bit of advertising. . . . → Read More: Alistair Darling at Millets

Motte and Bailey - Old Sarum

Old Sarum – Motte and Bailey

This is a picture of Old Sarum taken some time last year.

It was taken from a spot between the inner and the outer ring. The rings at old Sarum are two deep moats, with a rampart built up on the inner lip of each ring.
