Salisbury in old photos – Salisbury in the snow

Reproduced courtesy of Francis Frith.

This Francis Frith1 photo is Salisbury High Street on a snowy day in 1906. The ‘snowscape’ seems appropriate given the recent weather, and I thought it was interesting to see that you used to be able to but petrol in the centre of Salisbury.

Salisbury War Memorial

Salisbury War Memorial

For Remembrance Sunday, the picture above is the lion from Salisbury’s War Memorial.

Aerial view of Salisbury Cathedral

I bought this postcard a little while ago at an antiques fair. I’ve spent a bit of time since then trying to work out which road is which in the background, with little success.

I think it’s clear that the photo pre-dates The Friary and Churchill Gardens, but I don’t know the date. The . . . → Read More: Aerial view of Salisbury Cathedral

Yellow Pages Advert

This poster, advertising the Yellow Pages, was on billboards around Salisbury during the summer of 2009.

I tried to get a picture of the poster with the Cathedral itself in the background, but sadly my photographic skills weren’t any where near up to the job.

Anyway I like the way the Cathedral’s been photographed . . . → Read More: Yellow Pages Advert

Wilts and Dorset Banking Company

I like this plaque – it recalls a time when banks were local rather than national or international institutions. The plaque is on the Lloyds TSB building in the Market Square in Salisbury. It’s to the right of the door.

The Wilts and Dorset was merged into the Lloyds Bank in 19141. The Wilts . . . → Read More: Wilts and Dorset Banking Company

Green Man at Wetherspoons

This is the Green Man which appears on the cover of Salisbury Civic Society’s ‘Salisbury in Detail‘ book. It is on the north-facing side of the Kings Arms pub – otherwise known as either ‘Spoonies’ or, formerly, the County Hotel.

The picture below shows the Green Man in context. The foliage on the opposite . . . → Read More: Green Man at Wetherspoons

The Green Man at Barclays

This is the last in a series of three bath stone ‘Green Men’. The buildings Barclays, the Kings Arms and Lloyds Bank were all built at around the same time.

As with the Lloyds TSB ‘green man’, the Barclays man is not as verdant as some versions. Perhaps a pale green man?

This is as . . . → Read More: The Green Man at Barclays

The Cathedral from Castle Street

I like the view of the Cathedral from Castle Street, although I’ve never managed to get photograph that captures it.

I lived away from Salisbury for nearly 20 years and when I came back, it was a surprise that the spire has the windows that you can just about make out in this . . . → Read More: The Cathedral from Castle Street

Green Man over the door of Lloyds TSB

To celebrate the first day of spring, I think this is a representation of the Green Man. I could be wrong here – he’s not quite as verdant and covered in plant life as other Green Men.

Anyway, it’s a nice little sculpture above the door of Lloyds TSB in Blue Boar Row.

Antique shop in Castle Street

This head is one of a pair supporting what I think is called an ‘oriel window’ above the Castle Galleries antique shop in Castle Street.

This shows the head as part of it’s pair supporting the window:
