There are several hotels in Salisbury. I live in Salisbury myself, so I’ve never stayed in any of the Salisbury hotels. Therefore I can’t entirely vouch for what they are like to stay in. However, I obviously know where they are, I have eaten in most of the hotel’s restaurants and had a drink in their bars – so I hope the following will be useful.
I will get a commission if you book a hotel after clicking on the links on this page – I’m certainly not anticipating making much money from this, but it would be nice if I can cover the hosting costs for the site!
The White Hart Hotel
The White Hart Hotel is in the centre of Salisbury, just outside of the Cathedral Close. It’s in Saint John Street, just on the edge of Salisbury’s shopping centre.
It’s a 3-star hotel.
The White Hart hotel is an imposing building for a rural market town. It’s a 19th Century building – cream coloured rather than red-bricked, with a grand portico projecting out over the pavement.
The hotel plays an odd part in local parliamentary elections. On the day after the election, the successful candidate traditionally has to sing an old Wiltshire song ‘The vly be on the turmut’ on one of the balconies 1. The other part of the tradition is that the candidates have to pretend that they already know the words!
There are several good pubs very close to the White Hart – I would particularly recommend the New Inn in New Street, which has some claim to a Dickensian connection, and the Kings Arms, also in Saint John Street, which used to be the “local” of the late Prime Minister Ted Heath. The Rai D’Or in Brown Street is very good, but it’s more of a ‘Gastropub’ now, serving excellent Thai food.

The Red Lion Hotel
The Red Lion Hotel is right in the middle of Salisbury City Centre.
It’s an absolutely lovely hotel.
