11th November - Saint Martins Day

Saint MartinThe 11th of November is Saint Martin’s Day.

The Martin celebrated on the 11th is Saint Martin of Tours.

He was a Roman soldier who lived from AD 316 to AD 397. The famous legend about Saint Martin is that of his cloak.

Martin met a beggar outside the city of Amiens who was suffering from the cold weather. Saint Martin cut the cloak in two and gave one half to the beggar. According to the version of the legend I learnt at school[1], Jesus then appeared in a dream wearing the half of Sain Martin’s cloak.

Martin converted to Christianity, and became Bishop of Tours

[1] I went to both Saint Martin’s Infants and Juniors so I knew this story pretty well back in the 60s and 70s!
