17th February 2004 - public enquiry into a tunnel for the A303

On this day in 2004 a public enquiry on building a tunnel for the A303 near Stonehenge opened[1]

The tunnel was then projected to cost 193 million pounds and was going to stretch for 1.3 miles.

The plan was withdrawn in July 2005, partly because the planned cost had risen to 470 million pounds.
