21st May 1774 - Benjamin Franklin signs letter as 'A Freeholder of Old Sarum'

Franklin_SC1_1847.jpg On this day in 1774 Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to a newspaper and signed it:

Your humble Servant, A FREEHOLDER OF OLD SARUM[1].

This was an ironic reference to Old Sarum’s status as a Rotten Borough.
