Breamore - The Hulse Family's Home1109 On this day in 1927 Lady Edith Hulse of Breamore House was elected as Salisbury’s first woman mayor. Only one city, Norwich, has previously had a female Mayor.

Lady Hulse’s husband was Sir Edward Henry Hulse was Conservative MP for Salisbury from 1886 to 1897, and her father Lord Burnham founded the Daily Telegraph.

The Hulse’s son Edward Hamilton Westrow Hulse had died fighting in the First World War - I found a very moving letter to Lasy Hulse from Rudyard Kipling, whose son had also died. There’s an extract here: Lady Hulse and Rudyard Kipling « Salisbury, Wiltshire and Stonehenge
