18th April 1698 - the first HMS Salisbury is launched

HMSMordaunt.jpg On 18 April 1698 the first HMS Salisbury was launched[1] at Baileys Hard, on the River Beaulieu.

It carried 50 guns and was 134 feet long[2].

Sadly this isn’t HMS Salisbury - it’s HMS Mordaunt, which was a similar class to the Salisbury. They were both fourth-rate gunships. The drawing is by Willem van de Velde the Elder (circa 1611–1693) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons
