25th January 1858 - installation of Russian cannon in Salisbury Market Place

The_Battle_of_SebastopolOn January 25th 1858 the Mayor and Corporation received a Russian cannon captured at Sebastopol[1]. It was installed outside the Guildhall.

Sebastopol was the scene of the last great siege and battle of the Crimean War[2]

The gun remained in place until the Second World War, when it was melted down[3].
