Wiltshire Council tweeted this afternoon that Olympic multiple gold medal winner Michael Johnson will be carrying the Olympic torch on Thursday morning as it leaves Salisbury.

Michael Johnson is a hugely accomplished athlete. He won 4 Olympic Gold medals (at both 200m and 400m), and 8 World Championship Golds.

He has recently been in the news for making a documentary about the relationship between elite athletics and race. The Telegraph summarizes as follows:

athletes like him and Bolt, who are descended from West African slaves have a “superior athletic gene” due to selective breeding by slave owners and appalling conditions that meant only the strongest slaves survived.[1]
