  1. One of my favourite etymological ‘facts’ (which may or may not be true) is that ‘gargoyle’ is derived from ‘gurgle’. Their original purpose was to spout rain water away from their building – typically through the mouth – and the water therfore ‘gurgled’ through the gargoyle []
