Salisbury MP and Tranmere Rovers

Salisbury MP John Glen has criticized Wirral Council for sponsoring Tranmere Rovers. He’s quoted in the Daily Telegraph as follows:

“If the council is in significant arrears and faces challenges to keep basic services going, it seems a ludicrous way to respond by continuing to sponsor a loss-making venture at such a high level. It seems it would be appropriate at least to reduce it significantly.”

“The council may want to gain some popularity on the back of a local team, which might make sense at a superficial level but it does not help the poor or those in need of social care, who find that care workers are being cut.”

The leader of Wirral Council, Phil Davies, responded in a letter to the Wirral Globe:

“I would like to say that I find Mr Glen’s comments to be ill-judged and offensive.

The council derives enormous benefits from its sponsorship agreement with Tranmere Rovers. The fact that the team wears Wirral Council’s logo on their shirts in matches up and down the country enables us to promote Wirral as a place to live, work, visit and invest.

As part of the deal in the 2010/11 season, Tranmere players visited around 130 schools, carried out 1,500 coaching sessions, supported 50 charities, ran ladies and disability football teams, helped disadvantaged groups and ran six “Return to Work” courses at Prenton Park to help 18-to-24 year olds get back to work. “
