High Street Gate and the College of Matrons

This is the view looking out from the Close towards the Salisbury High Street. On the right is the College of Matrons, which was built by the astrologer bishop Seth Ward in 1685. It may have been designed by Ward’s friend Sir Christopher Wren. The picture was taken in 1900, but it looks much the same now as it did then.
