Merrifield Road, Ford

However, although there is certainly scope for confusion, the addresses for the two roads would be easily distinguished by their location.

Although they are fairly close together as the crow flies, Merrifield Road in in Ford, whereas Myrrfield Road is on the Bishopdown Farm estate.

Derivation of the names Myrrfield Road and Merrifield Road

In my page on the naming of Myrrfield Road, I was fairly confident that it fitted in with the ecclesiastical theme of many of the roads on the Bishopdown Farm estate – for example, St Clements Way, The Crusades and Apostle Way.

Myrrfield Road would fit in with this because ‘Myr-field’ was one spelling of the name of the location of Salisbury Cathedral(1). Another spelling is ‘Merrifield’ (2)

So given there are two roads so close together with such a similar name, is there another more local derivation of both names? Was there perhaps was another field with a similar name to the close?

I don’t yet know.
