Ramparts in Council Grounds, Salisbury

The name of ‘Rampart Road’ is derived from the ramparts (earth fortifications) that were made along the Eastern side of the city.

According to the Victoria County History

[the rampart] ran from the loop of the Avon at Bugmore 1 northwards to the corner of St. Martin’s Church Street, along the modern Rampart Road, and across the Greencroft. It then turned westward, north of St. Edmund’s Church to the Avon again west of Castle Gate. 2

The only remaining part of the rampart is in the Council Grounds.
