A ‘croft’ is defined as one of the following:
- a small farm worked by a crofter 1
- An enclosed plot of land, often adjacent to a dwelling house 2
- or, simply, a small piece of land 3
‘Greencroft’, I would guess, is more likely to be derived from one of the latter two definitions – the ‘crofter’ isn’t somebody who appears in anything I’ve read about the Salisbury area.
The Greencroft is now a happy place – there’s a really good children’s play area, but it has a darker history in that as late as 1619 the City reserved its ‘right of use for the execution of criminals’4
