Tournament Road - named after the London Olympics?
The first London Olympic games were held in 1948. I think it’s possible that the houses in Tournament Road are from this period, so my guess is that Tournament Road was named in honour of the London Olympics.

sir , i was led to believe by an old school master that tournament road refered to the fact that the first ever royal jousting tournament was held at old sarum wich isnt far from there.
Tournament Road was built in the 1930s. The first phase, on the left side going up, stopped at No 15, where my mum’s parents lived. It should have been No 13, but family folklore insists that my very superstitious granny had her objections upheld. The second phase followed (c 1936 I guess) and my parents moved into No 17 where I was born (literally: the midwife, Nurse Morris, was called from her home in Queen Alexnadra Road) in 1939.
I have been recording memories of my contemporaries in the road and would love to hear (at bull.hagiology at blueyonder.co.uk) from other former road-mates, browsing this page.
