By mattypenny, on April 25th, 2010% This is the Green Man which appears on the cover of Salisbury Civic Society’s ‘Salisbury in Detail‘ book. It is on the north-facing side of the Kings Arms pub – otherwise known as either ‘Spoonies’ or, formerly, the County Hotel.
The picture below shows the Green Man in context. The foliage on the opposite . . . → Read More: Green Man at Wetherspoons
By mattypenny, on March 21st, 2010% To celebrate the first day of spring, I think this is a representation of the Green Man. I could be wrong here – he’s not quite as verdant and covered in plant life as other Green Men.
Anyway, it’s a nice little sculpture above the door of Lloyds TSB in Blue Boar Row.

By mattypenny, on March 12th, 2010% This head is one of a pair supporting what I think is called an ‘oriel window’ above the Castle Galleries antique shop in Castle Street. This shows the head as part of it’s pair supporting the window: . . . → Read More: Antique shop in Castle Street

I like this purple dragon from the Saint George stained glass window in St Thomas’ Church. He looks as if he’s just biding his time to me, believing that he’s going to get the last laugh in the end.

By mattypenny, on October 30th, 2009% This is the badge of the Godolphin School. The interesting thing about it is the motto:
‘Franc Ha Leal Eto Ge’
…which is Cornish for
‘Frank and Loyal Thou Art’

By mattypenny, on October 27th, 2009% This sign has been put up on the path alongside the Avon, near Waitrose. I quite like it.
By mattypenny, on October 25th, 2009% Of course, I can see what the poster is saying, and I wouldn’t disparage the message at all, but …. ‘Dont loiter at stations’?
I’ve spent a good portion of my life loitering at stations- usually waiting for a train.
By mattypenny, on October 11th, 2009% This is one of the Red Lions from the hotel in Milford Street. According to the website, the Red Lion is possibly the oldest hotel in continuous use in England, and therefore conceivably the oldest in the world.

This is the first of what will hopefully be a series of pub signs which feature Salisbury Cathedral.
This is, obviously enough, the sign for the Royal Oak.
The old Royal Oak sign had King Charlie himself hiding in the tree. This one has the crown, and a Royalist holding a Salisbury flag. . . . → Read More: The Royal Oak pub sign, Salisbury
By mattypenny, on September 28th, 2009% I don’t know what these things are called – there ought to be a name for them. They are ornaments added to thatched roofs (rooves?). There’s a good owl on the other side of Salisbury.
I vaguely remember a news story about somebody who had a thatched kangeroo a few years back.

This is currently my favourite book on Stonehenge. It covers the influence of the Stones on art, architecture and such
