15th October 1853 onwards - sheep fair

From 1853 onwards there were sheep fairs at the Butts (opposite the Fire Station) on 15 July and 15 October[1]

The Victoria County History in 1962 said that:

In 1853, however, the city established two sheep fairs, on 15 July and 15 October, which were held at the Butts, off Castle Road. By 1860 they were sufficiently well established to be let, and have continued to be held until the present time.
