23rd November 1688 - James II retreats from Salisbury

Bishops Palace, Salisbury

In 1688, King James II had advanced as far as Salisbury in an attempt to repel the Dutch invader Willem Hendrik, who was to become William III

In Salisbury, James apparently suffered a debilitating nosebleed. It became apparent that there was some support for Willem among the population and the army.

James retreated back to London on the 23rd November.
