7th December 2007 - Unesco regrets Stonehenge roads

Stonehenge Winter Solstice 1On the 7th December 2007 UNESCO stated that it ‘regrets the U.K. government’s decision to cancel the A303 Stonehenge Road Improvement scheme on the basis of cost concerns[1]

The A303 problem has been under discussion by the World Heritage Committee since 2004.

The A303 Stonehenge Improvement Scheme had called for ‘a 2.1 kilometre tunnel within the World Heritage site’.

This was rejected on the grounds of cost. UNESCO urged the UK government ‘to find an appropriate solution compatible with the outstanding universal value of the property’.
