Timber Treasures Salisbury location to close its doors after years of service

The beloved Timber Treasures shop in Salisbury will soon close its doors permanently after years of serving the local community. Owner David Gladden has announced that the High Street location will cease operations on June 30, marking the end of an era for this cherished gift shop known for its handcrafted wooden items and unique gifts.

End of an era for Salisbury’s Timber Treasures

After serving as a staple in Salisbury’s retail landscape, the High Street branch of Timber Treasures has announced its closure. The shop, which has attracted both locals and tourists over the years, will permanently shut on June 30, 2025. This closure represents a significant loss for the Salisbury shopping district, as the establishment has become known for its distinctive selection of handcrafted wooden treasures.

Beyond its signature wooden items, Timber Treasures offers customers a diverse range of gifts including:

  • Handcrafted wooden treasures
  • Artisanal incense collections
  • Unique jewelry pieces
  • Decorative trinkets for home décor

Owner David Gladden, a 71-year-old Bristol native, has maintained a deep personal connection with Salisbury since 1993 when he first worked in the city. The shop has served as more than just a business; it has fostered a family-like atmosphere among its staff, with some employees having dedicated over 15 years to the establishment.

As the closing date approaches, Timber Treasures will implement a store-wide 50% discount beginning in May. Additionally, wooden tables and similar merchandise will be given away to interested customers, who are encouraged to visit the shop to discuss these offerings.

Challenges leading to the Salisbury closure

Several compounding factors have contributed to the difficult decision to close the Salisbury location. The first significant challenge emerged in 2018 with the Novichok poisonings, which dramatically affected foot traffic and sales. This was followed by the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a perfect storm of retail difficulties from which the business has been unable to recover.

According to Gladden, “We’ve not got back to what we were doing before that happened and sadly I’ve just built up a huge debt.” This financial strain has made continuing operations untenable despite efforts to revitalize the business.

Perhaps the most persistent issue has been the relentless traffic conditions directly outside the shop. The constant flow of vehicles and frequent emergency vehicle sirens have created an unwelcoming environment for potential shoppers. As Gladden explains: “The traffic flow is constant and the noise of ambulances all hours of the day and night—it’s destroyed our footfall. People don’t want to cross the road to come here unless they have a real passion for it or they’ve ordered something.”

Timeline of Challenges Impact on Business
2018 Novichok incident Initial decline in foot traffic
2020-2021 COVID-19 pandemic Severe reduction in sales
Ongoing traffic issues Persistent deterrent for potential customers

Despite these challenges, Gladden takes pride in the positive changes made to the building during his tenure. “There’s been a lot of positive changes, so we hand back a building that’s improved from the one we took over—which I’m quite proud of really,” he reflected.

Future plans for Timber Treasures and its owner

While the Salisbury branch is closing, the sister location of Timber Treasures in Bath will remain operational until January 2026. At that point, Gladden plans to close that store as well, marking his complete transition into retirement.

The decision to wind down his business operations stems from Gladden’s desire to prioritize family time, particularly with his young granddaughter. “I’d rather spend my retirement days looking after my granddaughter—she’s only two but it became obvious [it’s what I wanted to do] the older she got really,” he shared.

For Gladden, informing his long-term employees about the closure was especially difficult. He described it as “a terrible job” to write to staff members who had been with the business for many years. The close-knit nature of the Timber Treasures team has made the closure particularly emotional, with Gladden noting, “We’re a sort of family really—helping one another through everything and it’s a very difficult job to close a place and walk away from it.”

The closure of Timber Treasures represents not just the end of a business but the conclusion of a chapter in Salisbury’s retail history. For decades, this unique shop has offered distinctive handcrafted items that cannot be found in mainstream retail outlets. The loss of such establishments continues a concerning trend affecting high streets across the UK, where independent retailers struggle against multiple economic pressures.

As Salisbury prepares to bid farewell to this beloved shop, local customers are encouraged to visit before the final closing date to take advantage of the substantial discounts and perhaps acquire a lasting memento of this treasured local business.
